I recently came across money sitting in “unclaimed property” that had been there for 15 years. It was $1,000 from GEICO from a claim I had submitted in 2005. What's odd about that is I contacted them a few times about it and over time, I forgot about it. I sold that house and moved a few times, so they forwarded it to my state which put it on the unclaimed property website.
I started searching my friends and family and found quite a bit of money sitting there for relatives, including my grandpa who passed away twenty years ago. I found unclaimed funds for my mom when she lived in New Mexico. I found unclaimed funds for my mom-in-law when she lived in two different states.

Connecticut Unclaimed Property
The primary objective of the unclaimed property program is to reunite rightful owners or heirs with their unclaimed property, which is remitted to the Office of the Treasurer by business entities after the business loses contact with a customer for a period of three to five years.
Unclaimed assets include, but are not limited to: savings or checking accounts, uncashed checks, matured certificates of deposit, stocks, bonds or mutual funds, travelers' checks or money orders, and proceeds from life insurance policies.
A permanent record of reports of unclaimed property filed annually by holders of such property is maintained by the Division. Unclaimed property holders include banks, credit unions, insurance companies, brokerage firms, utility companies, and businesses. The Division prescribes holder report forms and monitors reporting by holders. Such assets must be reported and remitted within 90 days following the close of each calendar year.

Unclaimed Property is a financial asset that is unknown or lost, or has been left inactive, unclaimed or abandoned by its owner. Unclaimed Property assets are held by business or government entities (holders) for a set period of time, usually five years. Minnesota Unclaimed Property
Each year, Commerce receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property from businesses and organizations that have lost contact with the owners. The Department is responsible for safeguarding the funds or property until claimed by the rightful owners or heirs.
Property is considered unclaimed if it is being held by a business or organization that has not had contact with the owner for a specific number of years. Common types of unclaimed property can include:

New Mexico Unclaimed Property
The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) is responsible for trying to reunite $150 million dollars with their owners. The purpose of the Unclaimed Property Office is to reunite lost owners with their property. They want you to have your property!
Generally, unclaimed property has monetary value and has been abandoned. Property is considered abandoned when efforts by the holder to locate the owner fail, and it remains unclaimed by the rightful owner for the number of years prescribed by statute.
When that time expires, businesses holding property for which the owner cannot be located turn it over to TRD. TRD is then responsible for safeguarding the funds, attempting to locate the owners, publicizing the names of apparent owners who cannot be located otherwise, and returning the assets to the owners as they come forward.

Oklahoma Unclaimed Property
On July 1, 2000, the State Treasurer assumed responsibility for the state’s Unclaimed Property Program. Every state has an unclaimed property program. The purpose of these programs is to return unclaimed property to rightful owners. Unclaimed property includes everything from jewelry, stock certificates, coin collections and cash.
Property is considered unclaimed when there is a lack of activity generated by the rightful owner of the property. Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner. If property remains unclaimed for a certain number of years set by statute, it is considered abandoned and must be reported to the state's unclaimed property program.

How to Search for Unclaimed Property
To search for funds, click on your state & enter a name in the name/business field; a specific order is not required (last name, first name, business name, etc.) To narrow your search results, enter a city or zip code.
Select the property(ies) you wish to claim. Initiate a new search for property reported under a different name but may be owed to you.
Once you have selected all properties you wish to claim, select “View Claimed Properties,” complete the claimant (your) information, and select your relationship to each property being claimed. You may be asked to provide supporting documentation in order to validate your right to claim to each property based on the relationship chosen.
